How To Use Miyuki Cut Delicas

A couple of weeks ago we asked you on Facebook if you knew much about Cut Delicas, and boy, did you answer! 85% of you voted in favour of finding out more, and as we aim to please, here's a quick overview of our Cut Delicas.

Let's start by looking at the difference between Miyuki Delicas and Cut Delicas.

Cut Delicas (or Hex-Cut as they are sometime known) are Delica beads that have cuts or facets on their surface, which catches the light to create a little extra sparkle and shine. And as they are made by Miyuki, you can be guaranteed that the quality and precision in each bead is always present.

This close up of some size 8/0 Cut Delicas clearly shows the cuts on the face of the beads.

Now take a look at the peyote stitched samples below and you'll be able to see the difference between the standard and the Cut Delicas (if you need some help though, the Cut Delica beads are shown on the left in both pictures).

So when, and why, would you use Cut Delica beads?

As with the 'regular' Delica beads, Miyuki Cut Delicas are uniform in size, shape and colour, so can be used when you want to incorporate finer detail or colour gradient work into your jewellery making - for example if you wanted to mix two colours together. The Cut Delicas look especially good when weaved into loom work!

And yes, Cut Delicas can be used in patterns that call for standard Delicas, however please note that as the cuts enable the beads to sit slightly closer together, you might find that the work is a little stiffer and with less drape then with normal Delicas. This can be really useful when you want to make a 3D form or a piece with less movement.

Another important point to note is that you may also find they work up slightly smaller than standard Delicas, as the cuts allow them to sit closer together. So, dependent on your pattern, you may need to make some tiny adjustments to accommodate this.

Cut Delicas are available in the same sizes a standard Delicas. We carry sizes  8/0, 10/0, 11/0 and 15/0 in a wide range of colours, so you can mix and match them with 'regular' Delica beads, or make them a feature in their own right!
